Boys' vs McKay

Great game today as Thompson blew out the Mckay Mustangs 27-21 with some good drives by Tariq and Rahul and other great plays by Thompson. Some highlights include Marcus’s spectacular shot under the net (which did not count) and not to mention the opposing teams shoelaces which stopped the game for a bit, but that’s nothing a mom can’t fix. Thompson hustled and worked hard, leading to a good win and the end of our basketball regular season.

Thompson Girls vs Brighouse

In a well-played game (let's not discuss the refereeing-done by me) the girls' team lost 34-12. Excellent passing was the theme of the day. Baskets were scored by Anastasia (who also scored 2 free throws), Sydney and Nisha. Keep up the good work ladies! Next game Thursday against Mr. Out's old school (Ferris).

Burnett Breakers Classic Tournament information

Happening on Tuesday, March 6th and Wednesday, March 7th.

Boys Team:
We have had a couple of team meetings recently and discussed some options but since this is a grade 7 tournament we have decided to take all eligible grade 7's to play in this tournament. We will also be taking Bryce and Rahul to play. This means that we may have as many as 17 players. Apologies to those grade 6's who will get their chance next year. Playing time for the whole tournament will be equal, but it won't necessarily be equal in each individual game.

If any boys are unable to attend on either of these days (as we discussed) please tell me now.

Mr. Rollins

Welcome back Ms. Bahd

20 boys were ready to take on our "furthest" opponent yet as they had travelled over from McNeely School in east Richmond. It was well worth the wait as many of the McNeely boys showed great skills and adept shooting touch throughout the game. The defense was "resting" in this game as it quickly became a high scoring affair. The Tigers won't get a chance to avenge this loss, but everyone learned something in this game that was close until the end. Final score McNeely 40, Thompson 26.

Blair Scare

The girls played a hard fought game against Blair last night.  By the second half, the girls were able to tie the game, but were outworked by their competitors in the end losing 22-12.  The difficult conditions of the Blair gym (dusty floors and slippery basketball) might have played a factor, but a lack of communication also caused many poor passes and turnovers.  The girls are hopeful and excited to redeem themselves at the Breakers Tournament in a couple of weeks.  Only two more games left for the girls, both of which will be hosted here at Thompson.  Good luck girls!

Thompson Grade 6 boys' vs. Splu’k’wuks

Today was the Tigers vs. Eagles. Thompson came up strong in the first half scoring 26 points! We got lots of fast breaks (thanks to our good defense) and we scored most of the fast breaks. Zack had his game high nine points, great job Zack! Bryce got lots of points in the paint and many assists and got some nice blocks. Kevin came up strong and got four points (on a couple of far out shots) and made some beautiful passes to Zack great job! We played good defense and completed our passes, Kyle almost got his first basket of the season, we played a great game today and got lots of points. The good thing was that we didn’t foul that much. The final score was 46-24. Great job boys!!! Keep up the awesome job boys and lets win some more games!!!!! Go Tigers!!!!!!!!

Boys win with Defence against McKay

A strong defensive effort Tuesday after school results in a 30-10 win for the boys. Robert played his first game of the season and Matthew P scored a few nice baskets in this one. The defence was strong all game, allowing only 4 baskets and a couple of free throws against us. Many coaches always say that you "get noticed" for your offence, but that defence "wins championships".

Girls claim close victory

On Thursday, February 16th, the girls faced Spul'U'Kwuks for the second time this season. Compared to the first time they faced this team, (which was also their first game of the season), the girls displayed more confidence, and demonstrated their improved defensive and passing skills. Winning by 2 points in an exciting first home game, the girls look forward to seeing Spul'U'Kwuks at the Breaker Classic.

Boys' Basketball "Homework"

Gentlemen, the homework passage is due next practice (so Tuesday Feb. 21st). You can ask anyone (other than myself or Mr. Out) for help and you can use the internet if you choose.

Thanks and have fun.

Boys Vs Blair

The boys "travelled" (you know, because there was a lot of travelling going on in this game) to The Dragon's Lair for this one and it turned out to be a great game. Thompson was up by a score of 18-0 before Blair got their first basket. Zack scored his first basket of the game in the second half and strong games overall by Bryce, Kevin and Keaton led us to a 41-25 victory.

Close game vs Spul'u'kwuks

Well, you win some and you lose some... After winning by 1 point against Ferris earlier this week, the exact opposite happened against the grade 7 group from Spul'u'kwuks. We lost by 1 point this time. We were playing well until the last 2 shifts when the tall players from Spul'u'kwuks started to take over this game. They have beaten us both times this year, but we will get to play them again at the Burnett tournament.

Girls basketball game against McKay

Yesterday, the girls had a game against McKay. AND THEY ROCKED IT! The score was 24-15.  The girls really did an awesome job. This was their second victory so far out of the six games they have played. The game was very exciting. Anastasia again was our superstar! Always putting herself out there trying to get some baskets for the team. Another amazing thing that happen during the game was that Amber shot her first basket! We were all so happy for her. I think the girls did an amazing job this game and they always have. McKay was a very pleasant school to compete against. Great job girls!

Boys vs Ferris (the Rematch)

Today was one of the most intense games so far; it was a rematch against the Ferris Falcons. The other team managed to move around our defense, and scored a few baskets in the beginning. We immediately caught up and made it a very close game. Ferris scored first with a nice lay-up. There were a few fouls, luckily Bryce scored most of the free throws. After the first half the game the score was Thompson 19 and Ferris 18. It was a very close game, as Thompson would score and then Ferris would score. There was one sequence where Thompson got 5 or 6 offensive rebounds in a row; great job on the glass by Zack and Tate. The next couple of shifts went really well, with Jeffrey, Shakur, Vincent and a few other people driving in and making several nice baskets. There were also a lot of terrific passes. The last shift was the most intense with the back and forth baskets. Wilson made the last basket for Thompson making it a win for the Tigers. Ferris would have won, but their last shot was canceled as it was supposed to be a foul for Thompson. Leaving the final score as 35-34. Fantastic Game! GO TIGERS !!!

Who is Jeremy Lin?

Well, he attended Harvard. Not too many NBA players have done that. He's also the first American born player to be of Chinese or Taiwanese descent. He was not drafted after college but did sign a contract with his hometown Golden State Warriors. He was then cut and then cut again earlier this year, before recently making a splash with the NY Knicks.

Here are his first 5 games as a starter there (he plays the Point Guard Position)

POINTS       ASSISTS
25                      7
28                      8
23                     10
38                       7

Thompson vs Ferris

Mr. Rollins goes back to Ferris (where he taught for the past 2 years) and there were lots of fans in attendance. This game featured some slick play by the Falcons as they jumped out to an early lead with their not quite 10 foot hoops and their size 7 game ball (that's too big). Thompson got strong efforts from Nishaan and Matt. P. along the way, but it wasn't enough against a strong team. We get a rematch with those very same Falcons very soon as they come to Thompson on Monday. Final score 48-23 for Ferris.

NBA video for that cool song that Vincent liked

It's called "Live Forever" and it's sung by Drew Holcolm and the Neighbours. The video is pretty cool too. It's a bunch of footage from the NBA of "old" players from eras gone by playing with or against the "new" superstars of the NBA.

Enjoy.

Boys vs Grauer

A well-played low scoring game was won by the Thompson boys by the score of 27-11. Several nice baskets and a few almost fast-breaks. Play of the game was when Jeffrey cut backdoor and got wide open, but unfortunately never got the pass he was hoping for. Next time.

Boys Grade 7 vs Spul'u'kwuks

Today’s game was against Spul'ukwuks (Grade 7s only). We started the game off with a basket from Josh which got us all motivated, but Spul'ukwuks managed to get past our defenses and score a couple of baskets. Our next shift went really well with James scoring a couple of bank shots with the assistance of Vincent. Spul'ukwuks fouled our players six times leading to 6 foul shots, luckily we scored most of them.
During the second half Spul'ukwuks went aggressive and scored a bunch of baskets, however that still didn’t stop Vincent from rejecting his check’s shots over and over again and driving up for a layup.
Unfortunately, that was our last shift and the game ended 26-33 resulting into the boy’s first loss of the season.
Overall this game was a really good game. GO TIGERS!

Girls Basketball Game (Brighouse)

Yesterday, the girls basketball team went to Brighouse for their third game. The Brighouse team was really rough, and they fouled Thompson a lot. There was a lot of pushing and shoving and everybody was tumbling and falling to the floor. I think the coach didn't call enough fouls on Brighouse and that was kind of unfair for our team. We did have some supportive friends come and watch the game and cheer us on though. All of the girls on the team were trying their very hardest and tried to be aggressive as well. We all saw that numbers 40 and 47 on the Brighouse team were really good. They dribbled very fast and were able to get to the net quickly. Every person on the team tried really hard to get baskets, but it was frustrating how Brighouse got away with so many fouls. Lots of girls, including me, got hurt.
We lost 22-6 and even though that is quite a bit, we know that we were trying our very hardest.

GO GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM!!! hopefully we will come back in our game with Grauer next Tuesday!!

Tigers Soar Above the Falcons

The Tigers triumphed over the Ferris Falcons during the game on Wednesday. Thompson started the game off by shooting the first basket. Even though the opposing team was bigger than many of the Tigers and a bit faster than most, their skill and smarts got them the points. Everyone stayed on their checks and passed fairly well. They also got quite a lot of rebounds. In the second half, Anastasia outshined the rest. She wrestled for the ball like it was a suitcase with a million dollars inside (technically a suitcase wouldn’t be as bouncy) and drove it down the court so many times. At the end, Thompson beat Ferris 21-18. It was an amazing game.

Thompson Boys 48 vs Brighouse 41 (Wed. Feb.1)

Yesterday was the 2nd boys basketball game of the season in which the Bulls and Clippers played Brighouse.  We were slow to start and by halftime the score was 24 Brighouse to 10 Thompson  (of course my cheering squad and I did not give up hope and throughout the rest of the game we were chanting and yelling). Then in the second half we made a tremendous comeback and defeated Brighouse 48-41.
I think that one of the best parts of the game was when Wilson made the very first screen and that set everyone else off making screens. Another great part was that we stole the ball and succeeded in scoring a few layups.
Congratulations to you guys! great job!
